After seeing Monica's post about Matthew's chocolate lab, I had to find the one Taite made! I was thinking it kind of resembled Matthew's, with one exception ~ the one protruding eye! We asked him about this and he didn't even seem to notice. . . To get the full effect, I had to take a video of all sides. Remember he made this just last year in 2nd grade! It's a piggy bank with a slot on the top for your money ~ just for laughing you have to put $1 in!

Last night in the mail we got a card that the township or someone is holding a special meeting to notify us of a sex offender moving into the area. He's a level 3 and my immediate reaction was to be concerned about the boys! Well, Chris looked it up and he wasn't a threat to children, he raped a woman in Rochester a few years ago. So, I'm relieved and Chris is then still upset because of when he travels and I am home alone during the day. Guess that's what the alarm is for!

I had to take sugar cookies to Brayton's class today for the Halloween party on Friday. Of course I looked for them starting yesterday (I wanted them to be fresh) and they cannot be homemade. . . Do you know how hard it is to find cookies to decorate that you didn't preorder??? Luckily after looking at a few places, we went to HyVee and they had 2 boxes left at their bakery. We coughed up the $5.50 for 1 dozen of pumpkin shaped cookies and wished we could've made cutout cookies at home to send to school! Chris suggested that ~ how would they know? Ummm, the container we send them in might give us away :-)

Grandma's Birthday

Tonight we went out to eat at the Hog Trough, er, The Old Country Buffet I mean, to celebrate Grandma's 92nd birthday (which actually is tomorrow, but for scheduling reasons we celebrated today). After the eating was done and the conversations began, the boys were coming up with some creative ways to stay entertained. I can honestly say I like where they entertain themselves and I don't have to come up with the entertainment for them. Not that I could do it quite like they do. . .

They began with a game of "Am I thinking of 'A' or 'B' scenario", which evolved into weird food creations (carrot cake, carrot pie, carrot chicken nuggets. . .) and ended with a spelling challenge. Taite was asking Brayton how to spell words and then it turned into me giving them both a word to spell. I started with egret : ) Steph thought the boys' games were funny and somewhat weird, but I thought it was creative and whatever worked to keep them from going crazy! After all we were there for 2 hours!!

Brayton got all the words right on his spelling pretest so he doesn't have to take the final test on Friday. . . The ironic thing ~ last week on his pretest and final test he spelled step wrong because he always writes the 'p' backwards! We practiced and (erased and re-wrote everyday) the letter 'p' and he still got it wrong on Friday!

I love this time of year. . .

Well, not so much that I don't get sick of it, but I do enjoy being able to sew without feeling guilty for not being outside. My favorite thing to sew are bags. I don't think you can have too many! I don't like to just sew them, though. I like to see how creative I can be to use small pieces of fabric and still come up with something cute!

Here is Steph's bag. She liked the beach fabric that has the blue background, but I didn't have enough. I saw these squares in a pillowcase pattern and decided to use them on this bag. It turned out sooo cute! I found the blue poka-dot fabric to match the blue plaid in the main fabric that the other colors were pulled from. I hope she likes it as much as I do, otherwise I'll have to give her mine, I suppose (below) :)

We even put the big heavy comforter on the bed today! I love sleeping with the "winter" sheets! I didn't get out my snowman plates yet, but they are next ~ it did snow most of the day today AND we had a high wind warning, whatever that means. I thought they only issued those in the summer for the boaters, but apparently they don't want anyone boating today. . . LOL

Hidy Ho~

Looks like we are up for another windy day. Not my kind of weather ~ messes up the hair! LOL

Well, I know everyone is wondering (actually those who knew about them) and Brayton has survived his 2 back-to-back birthday parties from yesterday. He has a cold, so I had my doubts as well, but we made him go to bed early on Friday (with the coughing he didn't fall asleep until 9:30, though) and I had him lay down (for quiet time) before leaving for the parties. The first party was a Halloween party/Birthday party and even the parents were dressed up! They had 14 kids (all at their house) and it looked crazy! Bray of course had a good time and his second party was at JETS (it's a gymnastics place and they do birthday parties). For one flat fee (depending on the number of kids invited), you just show up and they do everything, oh wait, you do have to provide the guest list so they can mail out the invites. It sounded like a great deal but when another mother and I figured out for the party that Brayton went to (they invited the whole class) it cost $245! Even for 10 or less kids, the fee was $190. So, I guess we'll stick to the smaller parties (6-8 kids) and just make do with the stuff at our house! Anyway, Brayton was covered in blue frosting and I know he had a good time because he talked all the way home and continued to talk until we put him to be around 7. He didn't come up for breakfast until 7:30 this morning, so I'm not sure when he woke up but there was no coughing so he must have slept most of that time and gotten over his cold for the most part.

When Bray was partying, Taite played Wii Madden Football. It's his latest "thing". They play at recess after lunch and he asks us often if we think he'll be good at football or if he'll be able to play in the pros. I don't dash his hopes, but I try to stress how difficult it is to play in the NFL ;-) In researching Taite's suggested reading level of books, we had some Ramona books (some of you grandma's / grandpa's might not remember LOL) and Taite's teacher said that author also writes some "boy" books similar to Ramona. Well, again, I told Taite he could read what we had and I thought he'd like them, but he was reluctant (much like the time we bought the boys the 3 Stooges movies and they didn't want them because they weren't in color ~ I was right! They loved the movies!). So, I digress, Taite LOVES the Ramona books and is on his second one. The first story he came to me laughing to say that she was really mad and was going to say a swear word. . . "guts". So she said "Guts, guts, guts, guts". He thought that was so funny! To keep him (and Brayton) reading we have some reading on the big couch downstairs before bedtime. Brayton can finally read silently, so it works well and Taite thinks it's cool to spend time with me reading. Last night I had a little trouble staying awake, so I just turned to the side and closed my eyes a little ~ he caught me! Oh yea, I forgot to mention that while I was chauferring Brayton from party to party, Taite was helping Chris get more rocks for the side of the shed when Chris let him drive the "new" tractor. He was BEAMING when I got home! This is what he told me "It was finally nice to get outside and drive something!" LOL!!!

Guess what? (we were giving Brayton grief last night because that's how he started every sentence when talking about his parties) :-) The boys had dentist appts on Friday and NO CAVITIES!!! Taite, the opportunist, wanted to know then what they got for having no cavities. . . I told him a lot of praise from me and Chris :-) Well, we had to get presents for Bray's parties, so we ended up buying Pokemon cards for the boys. I figure the $10 I spent on them is FAR cheaper than what fillings cost!

Today we are off to Grandma's (Linda) house to make warm lefse and visit with Karen and Roger (my aunt and uncle from Texas are here for my Grandma's/her mother's birthday). The plan is to eat the lefse until it's gone because it's only good right off the griddle! We'll send Taite off with a tractor to take some to Chris since he'll probably be helping my dad combine corn again today. Hopefully lukewarm will also be good :-)

Hey there!

Last week the boys didn't have school Wed, Thurs & Friday so true to our form, we firmed up plans on Tuesday night to go visit Grandma Jane & Grandpa Tom. I can't even remember the last time we were there, but the boys are already asking about going back. It's not that we don't see them, they come here. . .which isn't very fair for them to always come this direction. Anyway, we arrived Wednesday night for supper and we ate at the Clubhouse or whatever it's called there at the Dunes. The boys were thrilled because it was Pasta Night ~ you create your own pasta dish and they cook it for you, using one of 3 sauces. Picture a made to order omlet set up only there are 3 kinds of noodles, all kinds of veggies, seafood, bacon, etc. It was very good and the boys really enjoyed it. On Thursday the boys and I decided to use the indoor pool up at the Club and we swam for 1 1/2 hours and were the only ones in it. It was also a good time. Friday Jane took the day off and we all drove to the Omaha zoo. Halfway through the zoo, I realized I had the camera set for bright lights/snow. We had to go back and retake the family picture, which turned out great. Brayton liked to sit on all the statues they had around the zoo

of the animals. It was really a nice day for the zoo. A little chilly, but not too bad.

When we were at their house, Taite stayed in the movie room most of the time. Brayton played with the "new" toys (something different from what we have) and Jane and I shared a lot of laughs cooking and drinking wine! :-)

The fun didn't stop there though! About 3 miles from home, Brayton was working on pulling a tooth, so Chris tried to help him while driving. Taite and I were plugging our ears so we wouldn't hear anything gross. Once we got home, they did get the tooth out and he only has 3 more that are loose! I told him if he pulled the rest he would look like a pumpkin!

Our dryer quit when we just got started on our laundry from the trip and Chris fixed it yesterday ~ just the heating element which was a relief! I thought, here we go, all our appliances are about 8 years old, so things should go downhill from here. . .

Taite came home with exciting news last night . . . (drum roll). . . He was voted onto the Student Council!! He was very excited and wanted to go out to eat, but no dice. We're mean that way! LOL

It seems like there were more things to share, but I can't think of any right now and I should get to looking at supper ~ oh yea, that's what. . . When we came home from SD, Chris made supper and he even made homemade bread! He figures if anything ever happened to me he should be prepared to at least make the fresh bread. It was excellent and he made pork burgers to go with the bread, which was even better! I think we'll keep him around!

I don't know how it happened!

We had conferences with the boys' teachers last night. I just have to say that I LOVE how Byron does their conferences (at least in the elementary school) they actually work it out so siblings have back-to-back time slots!

Our first conference was for Taite. We've always heard great things and usually the conference that is held in February we get the option to skip because there is nothing to discuss :-) Last night was no different. They test the kids (in the month they've been in school) with 2 different assessments: AIMS and NWEA and for both methods, and all areas, Taite is exceeding the average. In reading words per minute, he is exceeding the above average area ~ he's off the charts! His teacher just had one goal (there is a goal sheet where Taite filled out his area, she filled out hers and we are supposed to talk about and fill out the families goals for Taite) and she suggested he could slow down a little on his math. His score is a 96%, but it could be better if he would go back after being done with a test and review things. I used to be the same way though, the first one done and I didn't like to go back . . . I'm not telling him that! At this point he is concerned about getting a higher score, so we'll support him and help him out. Another thing they give us that I should utilize more is a Lexile score. What they do is take the numbers from his reading comprehension, speed, etc. and give him a level that he should be reading at, as far as books go. Then there is a website I can go to and type in a title and see what level the book is at ~ this helps so he is challenging himself when reading, not just reading something easy. His teacher said the book they are reading in the Cub Time (the special reading group he is in) is really funny and one of her favorite books. She listed off a bunch of authors that she liked, so I am going email her for the list so we can get good "boy" books that will hopefully instill the lifelong love for reading ~ something you can do forever and anywhere!

When we saw Brayton's teacher she couldn't say enough good things! He's a great reader, he's really good at math, he helps other kids with reading and math and isn't cocky about it at all, when he has free time he usually digs out his chapter book and reads. She said he reads differently than other kids do, so she said it's nice to have the two styles in her classroom and the kids explain how they read and it helps the other ones who haven't "clicked" on the reading yet. I love how they structure the reading in 1st grade too! Based on the kids reading scores, they divide them into appropriate groups and then read with these groups at their levels. It helps them grow from group to group ~ she showed us that Bray's group has 4 in it and they will be challenged a little more because they are basically starting out at the top of where they hope to get them to at the end of this year. Each child received a Bang! game ~ it's got a wooden die in it and you roll a number then pull out that number of slips with words on them, if he can read the word, he gets to keep it, if he can't, it has to go back into the can (Pringles so they can reach in without seeing what they are taking). His game has 2nd grade words in it so it's challenging. I was surprised she tailored the games for each student. She said that when Brayton digs out his chapter book, the other students look to that as a goal for themselves and she said she doesn't know how, but he can read when the rest of the class is noisy and doing what 1st graders do! She admires that about him :-) Now all we have to do is find all 10 chapter books so he'll read them (I don't know if I told that story, where we went to the BookMobile to get chapter stories and he would only get ones with 10 chapters; not 9 or 13, only 10 ~ that's what the Magic Treehouse stories have)

As a celebration of their successes at school we went out to eat. Lately Taite has been wanting to order off the adult menu, so last night we treated him to that ~ sheesh, we won't be able to afford to go out to eat anymore unless it's at Mc Donald's! I always think he doesn't need to eat what he does, but he's growing and almost as tall as me, so duh, of course he needs to eat more :-) I hope and pray that the boys' success continues on the path is going. They both still really enjoy school and want to work hard. They love the praise their teachers give them (and we pass along) for the work they are doing. So I really do not know how it happened; these two doing so well in school, but I'm glad it did!

Okay, quick post here: I have some queen size sheets on CL for $3/set ~ a lady emails me this morning: Do you still have these? Do you know what thread count they are?

THEY'RE $3 LADY!!!! Go buy some sheets for $60 and then you'll know what thread count they are! Sheesh!

Oh what a day!

I am kind of glad today is close to being over. . . Chris and I have been talking about putting large rocks around the shed to alleviate some of the erosion. Well, today was the windiest day we have had in a long time, so what better day than today to fight with long rolls of large sheets of plastic?! It was kind of a challenge, but once we got some of the larger stones set on it, we filled in here and there. We will eventually fill in even more, but with much smaller rocks. We would never have been able to do this today if my dad and his skid loader weren't here! We cleaned out just two of the rock piles that lay on the outskirts of the fields surrounding our house! I tried to keep the shed door in the one picture so you can get some sense of how big some of these rocks were.
Chris had to manhandle all of the rocks and get the best placement (for the ones he could pick up) and for the others, the skid loader placed them and wiggled them in so they would stay put. I'm also glad we didn't have to pay for these! I have no idea how many tons they would weigh. Dad and Chris did have to go visit the "Mother Rock" when they were out and about. When we built our house, there was a rock that was found when the terrace was built and the dozer could've pushed it up in our yard, or down in the brush waaaayyyy down the hill. It is now way down the hill because I was not going to have any big rock like that in my yard (this is according to my dad that I said this, but I don't remember). Granted, I don't know what I would've done with a rock larger than our kitchen, but it certainly would've started a lot of conversations! Chris thinks it's 7-8 feet tall and at least that in diameter. Now they dream about how to get it out of the tall grass and shrubs.

It's not just because of the rock project that I am glad for the day to be done (after all, Chris is the one who may not be able to take enough Tylenol to sleep tonight. . .) oh no, it all began when I needed to make supper. Since my dad helped us all day, we fed him and my mom. Between my mom and I we were going to make a chicken, broccoli, rice and cheese casserole, fresh bread and a cake. I thought she had a recipe for this casserole (she makes it all the time) but no recipe today, so we made it up as we went and I almost forgot the cheese. I put this in the oven and after it had been in there for 15 minutes (it was in late as it was) Chris realized I didn't even have the oven on!!!! So, I bumped up the temp by 25 degrees hoping I didn't burn it. When we finally sat down to supper, I had put some casserole on Taite's plate to cool it off and went to set it down just as he was scooting his chair up and I hit him in the head with the plate right on his eyebrow bone! I felt terrible and he cried all through the prayer (okay, that was only like 10 seconds, but he was crying nonetheless). My dad asked if we ate honey and I said "sure, did you want some?" Oh, of course he did and so did Brayton, but could I find any? NO! Well, we did have one small packet from a restaurant and I have no idea where it came from, nor how long we have had it (it didn't pour right out like it should ~ but we all know, dad ate it anyway!) :-)Then Taite was helping to clean off the table and dropped a glass as he was carrying it to the kitchen and it shattered all over the floor. When mom & dad went to leave, we were (well, three of us were) walking them to the door when Chris accidentally elbowed Brayton right in his eye, so we should be getting a call from the social worker tomorrow at school because our kids' faces are all swollen and bruised. . .

This evening it just seemed that no matter what, things were not going in the right direction! At least the bread turned out for the most part (I had to bake it in the toaster oven since the casserole was in the regular oven and one round was a little doughy and one was burnt on the bottom). Okay, so at least we can be thankful all of the bad stuff happened in the house and not when we were dealing with heavy rock ~ we could very well be in the ER tonight! And we created some memories, such that they are. . .

So I know I kind of give my kids a bad wrap on here, it's just a convenient place to vent. I do have to admit, though, that they are getting better. Today Taite was in the best mood he's been in for a long time. Chris thought his attitude may be due to the allergy pills, so we discontinued those a couple of days ago. I've gotten more hugs than ever today! It's great!!! My smiley, happy son is back!

Brayton woke up today with a headache. We think it's due to congestion because of allergies, but I'd hate to give him Tylenol and then send him to school only for it to come back. . . he is definitely going to school tomorrow! LOL He started the day out laying low and watching cartoons and as the day progressed, he was running around wearing his Halloween costume. He's kind of our "Chatty Cathy". Last night he was in the living room talking away and Chris was in the kitchen. I asked Chris if Bray was talking to him and he said, "yes, but I don't know what he's talking about, so I just acknowledge him talking once in awhile and he keeps talking"! It sounds terrible, but normally he is talking about the Pokemon game or something we have no idea what he is talking about :-) And he's as happy as can be "educating" us on his kind of stuff.

Tonight we finally finshed "The Bars" (you know the ones. . .I used Splenda instead of sugar). By the end, they were kind of like a concrete mass that we chipped away at, well, of course we chipped away at them ~ remember??? The good chocolate!!! So, we joked about it, but the boys did end up sharing the rice crispies with the little bit of peanut butter mixture on them. Here are a couple of pictures of them enjoying it ~ this gets me thinking. . . you know, Post-it notes were a mistake and made millions!!! Hmmmm. . . I might have to call Kellogg's tomorrow :-)

Tonight after we were done with the dishes and kitchen (another yummy recipe! Check out the Kraft foods website and look up the bacon cheeseburger roll) Chris and Brayton were doing a little wrestling and I had to grab the camera to record a little. Chris is always trying to teach the boys some defense moves so if someone were to try and abduct them, they could defend themselves. I wish I would've had the camera set up to watch Taite and Brayton watching this video ~ I thought they were going to pee while laughing! (Brayton did admit to peeing a little when he first watched ~ they've watched it about 5 times) ENJOY!

The latest. . .

Okay, so I don't really have anything important or any pictures, just some stuff!

1. Don't use Splenda for melting (as in Special K bars/scotcheroos or whatever you want to call them) We'll probably pour the cereal out of the pan when we are done with the bars and pour milk on it, I'm sure Brayton will like it (the peanut butter part didn't spread nicely so there is a bunch of cereal not "adhered" to the bars ~ you didn't think we'd throw the whole pan out did you? With all that yummy chocolate?!)

2. If you are looking for a really GOOD recipe to clog your arteries, we had it tonight and I can send you the recipe. It had salmon (don't think it offset the cheese & half & half though), shrimp, cheese, etc. Oh it was soooo good and then I thought we'd make the copy cat recipe of the Red Lobster biscuits. I read some of the modifications the people posted on the website and if you didn't know I was trying to copy the RL version, you wouldn't be disappointed. :-)

3. Saturday we went to the Book Mobile (comes to Salem ~ 4 miles from our house on every-other Saturday) and I was so excited to get Brayton some chapter stories! He quickly deflated my efforts when he informed me that he only reads stories with 10 chapters. . . The Magic Tree House book he is reading in his classroom only has 10 chapters ~ no more, no less! Sheesh! So, he brought home a Magic Tree House book from the school library today. Chris put him to bed tonight (or so I thought) and I was sewing downstairs when Brayton came to ask me if he could quit reading and go to bed!!!! HELLO~ I thought he was in bed, oh no, he was waiting for me to tell him to go to bed.

4. So, tomorrow I am torn. . . Brayton's class is going on a field trip to Oxbow Park (who - hoo) and I feel an obligation to go, but not really a desire. For the sole reason that Chris is supposed to go to the bank in Owatonna that NI Midstar has an account at to sign some papers. This is relevant to me how you ask? Well, Owatonna is right near the Outlet Mall in Medford and I just happen to have $10 off any purchase at the Bass outlet ~ LOVE THAT STORE!! So, I feel shallow and like a bad mom (Brayton did ask if I was coming along with him. . .)

5. On DishNetwork this month we have free the DIYNetwork channel. This has basically turned into me torturing myself watching all these renovations and drooling over what we could be doing to our house! Not that I don't like our house, don't get me wrong, I just like the ideas that are out there now. I even watched a show called something like Building a Man Cave and was inspired~ I'm not even a guy!!!

Well, anyway, nothing big going on here, just thought I'd share some things with you all ~ and to keep a certain reader from hounding me for not updating daily :O LOL!! Just kidding S.I.E.

Taite's room is done! Well, maybe just to GEFN status.

We tried to maximize space in Taite's room (previously he had the smallest room in the house and squeezed a queen size bed in it!) by getting a loft bed and under that bed having a reading corner and desk. Well, today we finally got the desk part done (just a piece of countertop, but works perfectly!). The chair for his desk isn't exactly what I had in mind, but I will keep an eye out for something more fitting. The light over the desk is also not what we'll keep forever, but works in the "Good Enough For Now" state it's in. In the reading corner under his bed, he currently has a butterfly chair that I bought from CL for myself for in the camper. He liked it so much, that I said he can use it (thanks to the back to college clearances, he is getting a new butterfly chair and foot stool for his birthday ~ shhh!). My dream was a chaise lounge for this space, but my budget didn't quite reach that far, even for used one.

About Friday. . .

So yesterday was kind of a busy day. . .

I helped out in Brayton & Taite's classrooms. I was able to chat a little with Mrs. Bendzick (Brayton's teacher) before I started helping. We laughed over Brayton telling me that Mrs. Bendzick's "wife" helped them paint on Thursday :-) We also talked about how well he reads (Brayton, not her husband). She said he just LOVES chapter stories! I had no idea. . . We have chapter stories at home, but not so many for a 1st graders level, I guess. Then she said the AR books (this is kind of a challenge thing for the kids ~ in their free time, they can read a book 3 times and then take a test on the book, if they answer the questions correctly, they pass 1 AR test and when Taite was in 1st grade, the goal was 10. . .Brayton has passed 6 already and they have only been in school 5 weeks) so anyway, she said that the AR books are not challenging for him at all. I said whenever he is reading out loud to me and comes to a word I am sure he will stumble on, he doesn't! She said she tries to challenge him in the classroom and can't either ~ so it just goes to show that both our boys are geniuses! :-) Here is a picture of him in his classroom working away.

In Taite's classroom I had to time them on accurate and speed reading for 1 minute. I laughed when Taite's friend asked me if he was supposed to read out loud :-) What I did in Brayton's classroom and Taite's classroom really opens my eyes as far as we take their ability to do their school work without problems for granted! I wish I could volunteer more to give more personal attention to the little ones who you can tell don't get it at home :-(

When I got home from my morning activities, Chris headed over to my grandma's house because they tore off the old shingles on part of the house and all of the garage. Today they will shingle it and the weather is certainly cooperating! We just have to be certain that Home Depot was sure when they said they'd deliver the shingles today. . .

Last night Chris and I took the boys to the Homecoming game in Byron. It was supposed to be a sure win, but that didn't happen. Not that the boys noticed! Chris has never been to a game up in Byron and he's never seen so many kids running around. Remember, Wessington: 100 kids per K-12; Byron: 120 per grade! Plus that doesn't include the preschool ages running around. He was a little stressed out trying to keep track of them, but we all returned home safely. I know you'll find this hard to believe, but the girls were chasing Taite and Brayton had made some older boys mad and they were chasing him. . . Ah, and we've only just begun!

It strange how the boys grow up like "all of a sudden". In the last week, Taite has come home with a few things that prove this. The first thing was a program they have at school for good readers/students. There are only a few chosen for this "Cub Time" reading enrichment program (cub as in we are the Byron Bears. . .). He was very excited to be chosen for this ~ we are too! We all think our kids are so smart and such, but it's nice for the school to recognize this as well ~ LOL!! The second sheet he brought home was about being a Student Council rep. When they are in 3rd grade they can only represent their class and in 4th grade they actually "run" for the positions of president, treasurer, etc. I had not given any thought about these things because I never participated, but I am glad he has decided to see if he can be chosen as a rep. They have to actually vote by class to see who gets the positions. I think this is a great opportunity for him!

Brayton is too young for this stuff yet (thank goodness!) so he still works on stuff like a Pokemon building or something. There are some toys I decided not to part with because of their ability to span many ages and one of them is this set of blocks. Brayton digs it out every once in awhile and this is his latest creation. Unfortunately, it is right in the middle where everyone walks, but it's stayed upright for a couple of days with only one "incident". I bought him a table to do homework at because the dining room table seems just too big and so I knocked over part of the tower when I was trying to get it out of the box. Brayton rebuilt bigger and better and LOVES his new table too! We don't have a chair for it so he is using his rocking chair until we come up with something, but he used it all night last night for homework, playing, reading! Here is a picture of The Tower :-) This is what he created on Print Shop ~ he wanted to "do that thing on the computer where you see the picture and can add words" ~ a kid after my own heart! I love the Print Shop software!
